The Serra Clubs of Green BayIt's an opportunity for Catholic men and women to affirm all religious vocations by fostering vocations to the priesthood, the religious life and the diaconate. The Serra organization was founded in the mid-1930's by four Catholic layman who wanted to serve the Catholic Church. They selected as their patron Father Junipero Serra. The Spanish priest had started his missionary work in Mexico, then proceeded north into California. Blessed Junipero Serra is still noted for the founding of the first nine missions from San Diego to San Francisco and is now a candidate for sainthood. Serra membership encourages spirituality through prayer and supportive Christian friendships. It continues our Catholic education with expressions of Christian principles and perhaps most importantly helps us fulfill our vocation to serve and brings Christ into the marketplace. Today, the Green Bay Serra Clubs are one of 675 affiliated clubs worldwide with 26,000 members. We have two clubs in Green Bay. One meets the second Friday of each month after the 6:45 a.m. Mass at St. Agnes Parish ending at 8:00 a.m. The other club meets the first and third Fridays of each month at noon at the Spot Supper Club. Noon Mass is celebrated followed by lunch and a speaker. By working closely with the Diocesan Vocation office, Serrans in various ways endeavor to foster religious vocations. In this day of mounting priest shortages, we feel our efforts are needed. All Catholics have an obligation to those individuals who willingly serve the church as priests, sisters, deacons and lay ministers, to affirm them in their ministry. It is felt that the religious life is not just a job, but a lifestyle, choosing to live Christ-like in the service of others.
